Double Success for School at County Eisteddfod

Two choirs from a village primary school have won their events in the recent Denbighshire County Eisteddfod and will go through to represent their school and county in the National Eisteddfod next month.
Ysgol Trefnant’s choirs, Choir Unsain and Cerdd Dant Choir, both won first place in their competitions. In the recitation poetry category, year 2 pupil, Noah Cunningham, came second for his reading of ’Dwy ran i’r corff ‘.
Mr Tomos Williams worked with pupils in years 2, 3 and 4, teaching Welsh poetry in the lead up to the competition. He said: “The competition was very tough but Ysgol Trefnant came on top to win the choir events which is brilliant. Mrs Bethan Antur has been working extremely hard with the choirs since the autumn term and it’s great to see that all the hard work has paid off. Noah Cunningham also did extremely well to come second in his poetry recitation, he has done us all proud.
“The Urdd is something we offer to all our pupils in school, and this year we had pupils in years 2 through to 6 taking part in a variety of events. Mr Williams added: “Each year the standards are extremely high and therefore the pupils need to be well rehearsed and prepared. The children have been working hard on their poems and choir pieces since October 2016. ‘Last year we made it through to the National Eisteddfod in Flint and came second in the Cerdd Dant event where the choir sings. “Our numbers in school have steadily increased over the last few years, as has the number of pupils taking part in Urdd competitions. Staff and parents have noticed how much the competitions have improved pupils’ confidence, as well as their knowledge and use of the Welsh language.”
“At the competition, all the children and parents were overwhelmed with the results and we are all looking forward to the next stage!
Pupils will begin fund raising in school over the next few weeks to raise money for the trip to National Eisteddfod, which takes place in Bridgend, South Wales during the May half term.
Mrs Van Loock, headteacher, said: “I am absolutely delighted with the success of our pupils at the County Eisteddfod and wish to congratulate each and every one of them, we are very proud of their achievements.
“A huge thank you also to all of the parents and teachers for their support, especially Mrs Bethan Antur for teaching the pupils the choir pieces and to Mr Tomos Williams for teaching the poetry. We are excited to see them perform at the National Eisteddfod and wish them every success.”
