Social Worker Picks Up Award

Denbighshire County Council has congratulated one of its social workers for picking up a prestigious social care award in Cardiff.
Sian McGraa picked up the Spirit of Social Work Award by the British Association of Social Workers Cymru. The award is given to an individual social worker who provides an excellent service that makes a difference to the lives of the children, adults or communities with whom they work and which is ‘over and above’ their normal role.
Sian picked up a trophy and a year’s free membership of BASW during the event, hosted at the Senedd building in Cardiff Bay.
Sian was nominated for her sector leading work that included reuniting a mother and her children after being apart for 14 years. Despite numerous barriers, Sian supported this lady to move to a safe home with round the clock support for whatever she needed. After months of searching she also found her two youngest children in the care of another authority and successfully reunited them. Her children and their social worker had been looking for her for 14 years. In the end it was Sian who reunited the family and since then they have all developed a wonderful relationship moving forward.
Mohammed Mehmet, Denbighshire’s Chief Executive, said:
“I’m delighted to offer my personal congratulations to Sian. To be awarded with a national honour is true testament of her hard work, dedication and commitment. The case study illustrated in the submission shows how Sian has gone above and beyond the call of duty and has worked diligently to reunite a family together."
